With the vast experience acquired here, VNIIEF is successfully conducting fundamental and applied research in various fields of science and engineering.
The most dynamic areas are: nuclear physics, gasdynamics, kinetics of nuclear and thermonuclear reactions, material properties at high energy densities, nuclear to laser energy conversion, ultrahigh magnetic fields, laser fusion, and nuclear power safety.
As a world-class research organization, RFNC - VNIIEF is working towards adaptation of its technology developments to commercial goals, which includes design of various devices and systems.

The Institute conducts research in cooperation with key scientific organizations in Russia.
Since the early 1990s, RFNC - VNIIEF has been closely involved in the international science and technology interactions subject to the existing government and agency-level regulations. This offers an opportunity to perform research projects and advance high technologies for the Russian and international markets, where the Institute's personnel can integrate into the international science and technology community.
The Institute is participating in the international collaboration programs with research organizations in the US, Europe and Asia.
