Production of stable isotopes and superpure substances

Application of stable isotopes and superpure substances forms the basis for advanced science-intensive technologies in various areas of science and engineering. They are used in medicine for diagnostics, in radiation pharmacology as a raw material, in nuclear power engineering and electronics.

RFNC - VNIIEF has set up a plant for production of stable isotopes and superpure substances. It is based on the following unique technologies developed in Russia: centrifugal isotope separation for substances containing gaseous compounds and high-temperature water rectification.

The centrifugal separation technology for producing zinc, silicon, carbon, molybdenum, germanium, sulfur, krypton and xenon isotopes has been mastered and is successfully applied by VNIIEF specialists. High-temperature water rectification is used to make oxygen-18 and oxygen-17 isotopes, to remove deuterium from water and produce deuterium.

The stable isotope separation technology is an environmentally friendly process. In terms of the basic process equipment safety this technique has been brought up to perfection and is now consistent with the state-of-the-art isotopic enrichment of chemical elements.
