Manufacture of leucosapphire intraocular lenses
Leucosapphire intraocular lenses (LIOL) are artificial crystalline lenses used as implants in ophthalmology to treat cataract. This is a joint development by the Federal State Unitary Enterprise (FSUE) "RFNC - VNIIEF" and FSUE "EFKON".

LIOL lenses are distinguished by their perfect biocompatibility with the eye tissues, high optical quality and almost unlimited life time. Due to high biophysical inertness of leucosapphire, there are no application contraindications including diabetes. Some merits of the LIOL technology make the surgery less traumatic and provide professional comfort for a surgeon.
The production process includes application of the state-of-the-art technologies using computer and precision mechanics equipment. At present, LIOL lenses are a commercially made product. The next important step along this joint development was making the world first pilot batch of intraocular lenses using natural diamonds (DIOL).
Hundreds of thousand lenses have been successfully implanted at the clinics of Russia and FSU. The implantation results were presented at many international exhibitions and symposia. There are quality certificates and a license for serial production granted by the RF Ministry of Health.
